The difference is not luck. It comes down to what the floor is made of and how that material handles water. Hardwood looks ruined. Both assumptions are backward.

The carpet pad is engineered to be soft, open, and full of air pockets. Those pockets do one thing extremely well when water arrives. They fill.

The pad absorbs water like a sponge, holds it against the subfloor, and releases it slowly. Air movers blowing across the carpet surface do almost nothing to the pad underneath. The top feels damp. The bottom stays saturated for days.

  • A wet subfloor keeps feeding moisture back into whatever sits above it.
  • Structural stiffness drops before any visible sagging appears.
  • Fasteners loosen as the wood swells and shrinks.
  • Mold grows on the underside where nobody looks.

You can replace a floor covering. Replacing the subfloor means pulling everything up and starting over.
